What -is- Spice and Wolf?

Postby Denatus on Sat May 17, 2008 9:56 pm

Chances are, if you've stumbled across this forum, you probably have already seen or at least heard of this show. If not, here's a brief little summary for you.

The -official- website for the series is spicy-wolf.com. Unfortunately, it is all in Japanese except for the thing that says DVD at the top. If anyone knows Japanese and would like to translate the homepage for us, please, be our guest, it would help immensely. Which is another reason why I provided links to Veoh. People have translated this anime to english, or "subbed" it, so us poor fellows who don't know Japanese can watch it and enjoy it.

But First....

It was originally an eight-volume light novel series in Japan which grew in popularity due to its high quality. Unfortunately, these have not been translated yet. Fortunately for us, however, they decided to make it into an anime, and people have translated the anime, which for the most part seems to be accurate to the Light Novel stories.

However, first one must understand the difference between Spice and Wolf and other anime. This is so you don't dismiss it out of hand as another, not-worthy anime. Spice and Wolf varies significantly from the norm in that the central focus of it all is NOT on being some type of heroic beings hell-bent on some sort of revenge scheme with superpowers. The characters are extremely in-depth and they act sensibly within their situations. This is not to mention the high-quality of the actual anime itself. The world that Spice and Wolf is set in is beautiful and complex, one that you'll fall in love with the moment you start watching. I can't really explain it all in here. I'd suggest watching the first four episodes before passing judgment on this anime.

Where Can I read this?

I'm currently compiling Volume III of the Light Novel that has been translated and making it into a word file complete with pictures. When it has been reliably translated, I'll put it up for download.

Edit: COMPLETED! =)

Where Can I watch this?

You can buy it....or you can go on Veoh or youtube and type in Spice and Wolf 1, 01, Episode 1, ect. Veoh right now has every single Spice and Wolf episode both in the original Japanese and with subtitles. Simply click this link and type in Spice and Wolf 1 to start your adventure!

Where Can I PLAY this?[b]

Unfortunately, you'll have to buy the game. Even more unfortunately, There is currently no english translation for it. There IS a game however, titled: Ōkami to Kōshinryō Boku to Horo no Ichinen. Translation: Spice And Wolf: Horo's and My One Year.

(I know it's an ebay auction, but it gives you the general picture.

(Note: I, of course, do not condone ripping off the creators of spice and wolf, the information above is simply so that more people will know it, enjoy it, and tell their friends about it so that perhaps some of them will buy products.)

[B] I don't watch to watch or read this yet but I would like an episode guide list and summary of the anime.

This is for you: http://www.tv.com/spice-and-wolf/show/7 ... isode.html

Plot
Spice and Wolf's story revolves around Craft Lawrence, a twenty-five-year-old peddler traveling from town to town buying and selling various things to make a living in a stylized historical setting with European influences. His main goal in life is to gather enough money to start his own shop, and he already has been traveling for seven years while gaining experience in the trade. One night when stopped at the town of Pasroe, he finds in his wagon a pagan wolf-deity girl named Holo who is over 600-years-old. She appears to be that of a young woman, except for a wolf's tail and ears. She introduces herself as the town's goddess of harvest who has kept it blessed with good harvests of wheat for many years. Despite having the responsibility to watch over the town, she wants to go back to her homeland in the north called Yoitsu; she believes the people have already forsaken her anyway and that she has kept her promise to maintain the good harvests. Holo wants also to travel to see how the world has changed while she has remained in one place for years. She manages to bargain her way out of the village by making a deal with Lawrence to take her with him. As they travel, her wisdom helps increase his profits, but at the same time, her true nature draws unwanted attention. The show documents their travels as they attempt to make it to her home in the North.

Main Character: Lawrence Craft
Lawrence is a twenty-five-year-old traveling peddler who goes from town to town buying and selling various things in order to make a living. His goal in life is to gather enough money to start his own shop, and he has already been traveling for seven years while gaining experience in the trade. He meets Holo one night and eventually agrees to her traveling with him. She helps him by providing her wisdom which helps to increase his profits and get him out of jams. There seems to be some romantic development between them as the series progresses.

Main Character:Horo:

Horo is a wolf harvest deity originally from a land in the north known as Yoitsu. She made a promise with men from a town called Pasroe where she would ensure the town would have good wheat harvests year after year. However, as time went on, the townspeople slowly started to forsake Holo and did not rely on her as they once did. As such, Horo escapes from town in Lawrence's wagon and started traveling with him to see how much the world has changed since she has been in Pasroe. Horo has chosen the form of a girl younger than Lawrence, though she still retains her large white-tipped wolf tail, and ears. Her true form is that of a very large wolf which many people revered and feared.

She refers to herself as the "Horo the Wise". She is typically very haughty and self-sufficient, though due to her isolation for hundreds of years in Pasroe, she came to feel very lonely, and sometimes shows a more fragile side of her. She has a peculiar way of speaking, modeled after that of the oiran high-class courtesans. She is fond of delicious food and alcohol, though especially loves apples. She takes pride in her tail and takes special care of it, constantly combing and maintaining it.

First of all: Hi there ^^'

I've been looking the light novel and the manga (if there's one, I don't know) of this, and found this. I'm reading the chapters you updated. By the way, it's an official translation? Because I'd be glad to buy it. Anyway thanks for the upload, really. I'm not english (but spanish) anyway but compared with japanese I can understand most of it. Well also I'm thinking on study japanese so, I can't help you out for now on the official page :P

And, this forum seems to be made not so far away, huh? I wish you luck then :P

It's not an official translation. The chances of an official translation would be very slim. The anime itself is likely not to be licensed, since the US mostly licenses mostly anime series for kids (Pokemon, Yugioh, etc.). For a fact, they wouldn't license shows that are only 12 or 13 episodes long.

The best way is to either read the given translation or learn Japanese and read it yourself. There's no easier way.

Indeed, it is not an official translation. Part of Chapter IV is up, I will put up more as it comes. I will be translating the novel into Latin sometime in the future for people who don't know English or Japanese but somehow know Latin XP.

Anyway...Updated the General Info page to include the game and the light novel section...
